Jazirah plain
The Jazira Plain , also known as the Gezira Plain , is located between the White Nile and the Blue Nile , south of Khartoum , in the Sudanese state of Al-Jazira .
The plain covers an area of 8,500 km² and is around 400 m above sea level. d. M. and is characterized by heavy loamy soils. That is why the plain is used intensively for agriculture. From the 1940s, mechanized rain-fed farming began in sparsely populated areas . Sorghum is grown on most of the flat land, as well as sesame and cotton in small quantities .
On the western side of the Blue Nile south-east to the city of Wad Madani and in the central area around El-Monaqil, one of the world's largest interconnected networks of irrigation canals was created as part of the Jazira project , which is used for intensive agriculture and livestock farming. The Jazira project borders in the south, in the area between Kosti and Sennar , on the sugar cane cultivation areas of the Kenana sugar factory.
