Short internship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The short internship , also known as a trial apprenticeship in Switzerland and Austria , is intended to provide general career orientation within a professional field and to provide an initial insight into a specific profession or company .
In addition to privately organized internships, there are also work experience days in which an internship is completed as part of school lessons .

Basics

Short internships should serve to convince yourself of a job instead of trusting prevailing opinions or superficial descriptions. Short internships are completed by schoolchildren before choosing a career , are possible from the age of 14 or after completion of compulsory schooling and usually last one week. Normally, the intern is introduced to the various areas, departments and the corresponding work processes. If the short internship is not done during the holidays, but during school time, approval from the teacher is required.

You may not receive a salary during a short internship, but you will get a more detailed picture of the chosen profession and benefit from the first contact opportunities with your potential future employer . If you are not sure about your personal talents , it is advisable to look at a second job.

Initial information and job descriptions can be obtained from career counseling , job fairs , professional associations , the labor market service , and other specialists for career options. The advice centers and associations have been informed by the companies that offer short internships.

Young people can also first ask their parents and acquaintances where a short internship would be possible or find the company of their choice in the print media or on the Internet on their own. In this case, however, it is advisable to get help with a correct, written application before you contact us for the first time, which is automatically offered with good career counseling.

Practical days

In Austria, students are entitled to five practical work days during which they can stay away from class and do a trial apprenticeship . These days take place as part of the class. The responsibility for the process, content, duration, supervision and accompaniment lies with the respective teacher ( § 13b SchUG individual vocational (educational) orientation ). The students are insured against accidents , the chambers of commerce also offer liability insurance .

In addition, for pupils in the 8th grade elementary school, the 4th grade secondary school, the 8th and 9th grade special school, the polytechnic school and the 4th grade AHS there is the possibility of individual career orientation outside of school hours for up to 15 days per Spending calendar year in a company ( § 175 Abs. 5 Z3 ASVG).

Legal Regulations

The possibility of having interns do work for free is abused by some companies. State controls are inadequate. For this reason, a written internship agreement should be concluded in which it is expressly made clear that the work in the company is solely for professional orientation and without any obligation to work or pay.

In particular, in Austria the intern is not obliged to  do any work and is not subject to any instructions from the owner of the company , apart from safety instructions.
