from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The jihad of al-Hajj Mahmud in the region of the Black Volta took place in 1850 instead. He was al-Hajj Mahmoud, a scholar ( 'alim ) from the Qadiriyyah - Brotherhood led. Al-Hajj Mahmud returned from a pilgrimage to Mecca with the ardent desire to bring true Islam to his clan from the Dyula people , who until then had only been very superficially Islamized . His jihad to establish an Islamic theocracy initially had some success. However, he failed because of resistance from local traders who thwarted his plans.
