The General Intelligence Service ( GIS ; Arabic جهاز المخابرات العامة, DMG Ǧihāz al-muḫābarāt al-ʿāmma ), also Muchabarat ( Arabic المخابرات, DMG al-muḫābarāt ) or Mukhabarat , is one of three Egyptian secret services . The authority, based in Cairo, is primarily responsible for counter-terrorism and international espionage.

The other two are the military intelligence service Idarat al-Muchabarat al-Harbiyya wa-l-Istitla. ( Arabic ادارة المخابرات الحربية والاستطلاع) and the State Security Intelligence Service Gihaz mabahith amn ad-dawla ( Arabic جهاز مباحث أمن الدولة).

history

The intelligence service was founded in 1954 by Gamal Abdel Nasser . The organization was led by Omar Suleiman for the longest time - from 1993 to 2011.

In the Constitutional Protection Report 2019, reference is made to the fact that both the GIS and the domestic National Security Service (NSS) are active in Germany. Their main goal is therefore to gain knowledge about Egyptian opposition figures living in Germany, such as representatives of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood or members of the Christian Coptic communities.
