Ali Sabri or Aly Sabry ( Arabic علي صبري, DMG ʿAlī Ṣabrī ; * 1920 ; † August 3, 1991 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian Prime Minister .

biography

Sabri completed a military training and already took an active role in 1952 in the revolution of the group of "free officers" against King Faruq . Nevertheless, he was not one of the twelve members from the ranks of the Free Officers of the Revolutionary Command Council, which took power after King Faruq was overthrown and went into exile in July 1952.

As a close ally of Gamal Abdel Nasser , he was appointed by Nasser to succeed him as Prime Minister in 1962 and held this office until 1965. His successor as Prime Minister was Vice President Zakaria Mohieddin , Sabri was appointed Vice President of Egypt (until 1968) and General Secretary of the Arab Socialist Union , the only party authorized under Nasser.

In October 1970 he was reappointed vice-president under Anwar as-Sadat , Nasser's successor as president . However, he was dismissed from this post in May 1971 because he was accused of conspiracy to coup and overthrow Sadat. In the subsequent trial he was sentenced to death in December 1971. However, the sentence was later lessened to life imprisonment by Sadat, who finally granted him a pardon in 1981, a short time before his murder .
