Hasim al-Beblawi

Hasim al-Beblawi ( Arabic حازم عبد العزيز الببلاوي, DMG Ḥāzim ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Bablāwī , born October 17, 1936 ) is an Egyptian economist and politician. He was a professor at the University of Alexandria , UN Under-Secretary-General from 1995 to 2000 and then advisor to the Arab Monetary Fund . From July 9, 2013 to February 24, 2014, he was the interim Prime Minister of his country. Beblawi is a founding member of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party .

Life

Beblawi studied law, especially public law , and political economy at the University of Cairo . He completed further studies in economics at the University of Grenoble , which he completed in 1961 with a Diplôme d'études supérieures (DES). At the Sorbonne University in Paris he received his doctorate in 1964 on an economics topic. His dissertation was named the best of the year.

From 1965 he taught as a lecturer at the University of Alexandria . This appointed him professor in 1974 and assigned him as chief economist to the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD). In 1980 he moved to the Industrial Bank of Kuwait, where he headed the economics department until 1983. From 1983 to 1995 he was Chairman and CEO of the Export Development Bank of Egypt. In 1995 he was appointed Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for West Asia (ESCWA) for five years . From 2001 he was an advisor at the Arab Monetary Fund (AMF). He has also published books on banking, international trade and economic development. He also had a weekly column in the state newspaper al-Ahram .

Shortly after the Egyptian revolution , in March 2011, Beblawi was one of the founders of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party. Under Prime Minister Essam Sharaf , he became finance minister and deputy head of government in his country in July 2011. On October 11, 2011, Beblawi resigned in protest against violent clashes in the course of a demonstration by Copts in Cairo two days earlier, on October 9. Fighting between protesters, the army and armed thugs broke out at the rally. At least 27 people died and around 400 were injured. Beblawi made Essam Sharaf and his cabinet responsible for the incidents.

After the military coup and the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi , the interim president appointed Adli Mansur Beblawi as transitional prime minister on July 9, 2013. He should lead the government until a new constitution is implemented. He resigned from his position on February 24, 2014.

Awards

Beblawi has been a Knight of the French Legion of Honor since 1992 and commander of the Belgian Order of Leopold II. In 2000 he was appointed Grand Officer of the Lebanese Order of Cedars.
