Ahmad Schafiq

Ahmad Muhammad Schafiq ( Arabic أحمد محمد شفيق, DMG Aḥmad Muḥammad Šafīq , also Ahmed Schafik ; * November 25, 1941 in Cairo ) is an officer in the Egyptian Air Force and politician. During the 2011 revolution he was prime minister for a short time until President Mubarak was overthrown . In the first post-revolutionary presidential election in June 2012, he was in the runoff. On September 17, 2012, he founded the Egyptian Patriotic Movement , a political party.

Military career

Schafiq was an aircraft pilot in the Egyptian Air Force and later commanded an aircraft squadron. During the War of Attrition , Schafiq was a commodore of a squadron and then took command of an air force base. During the Yom Kippur War , Shafiq fought as a fighter pilot under the command of Husni Mubarak . It is said that on October 14, 1973, Shafiq shot down two Israeli aircraft near al-Mansura . Schafiq later became the commander of the air acrobatic squadron of the Egyptian Air Force.

The types of aircraft that he has flown during his service include the MiG-17 , MiG-21 and Dassault Mirage 2000 . In 1984 he was appointed military attaché at the Egyptian embassy in Rome, where he stayed until 1986. From 1988 to 1991 Schafiq held several command posts in the military. In September 1991 he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Air Force. He remained in this post until 1996 when he was promoted to Commander of the Air Force. In 2002 he became Minister for Civil Aviation.

Government offices under Mubarak

Schafik has been Minister of Civil Aviation under President Mubarak since 2002 .

After the outbreak of the revolution in January 2011, Mubarak appointed him to succeed Ahmad Nazif as Prime Minister of Egypt . However, his term of office was short-lived, from January 29 to March 3, 2011 .

After Mubarak was overthrown and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) came to power, the ministers of the Shafiq cabinet initially remained in office. On February 21, 2011, 11 ministers were replaced by former opposition members. Schafiq resigned on March 3 after severe criticism. His successor as prime minister was Mubarak's former transport minister, Essam Sharaf , the first civilian to serve as head of government.

2012 presidential candidacy

In the presidential election in Egypt in 2012 , he received the second most votes as an independent candidate. June in the runoff election against Mohammed Morsi ( Freedom and Justice Party ), which he just lost with 48.3 to 51.7 percent.

Procedure

On September 11, 2012, proceedings against Schafiq for corruption were opened. He was accused of having sold a piece of land to Gamal and Alaa Mubarak below market value in the 1990s as chairman of a housing association .

2018 presidential nomination

Ahmad Schafiq had lived in exile with his family in the Emirates since 2012 . Following his announcement that he would run for the 2018 presidential election in Egypt , he was expelled on December 2, 2017 and put on a plane to Cairo . His family say that neither they nor his lawyer could reach him. In a telephone conversation with a television station, Schafiq denied that he had been kidnapped.
