Dušan Mihajlović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Душан Михајловић ) (born September 27, 1948 in Belgrade , Yugoslavia ) is a Serbian lawyer and politician.

Life

Originally in opposition to the Serbian President Slobodan Milošević , Mihajlović founded the conservative New Democracy party ( Serbian : Нова Демократија Nova Demokratija , ND) in 1990 , which had its stronghold in Valjevo and for which he sat in the Serbian parliament from 1993 to 1999. When Milošević's coalition of communists and nationalists lost the majority in parliament, Mihajlović switched from the opposition to the government camp in 1994, his small party tipped the scales. As a coalition partner, he proposed in 1994, for example, a plan to divide Kosovo based on earlier ideas by Dobrica Ćosić . But as early as 1998, Milošević no longer needed a coalition with the ND and instead allied with the Radical Party .

In the Yugoslav presidential elections in 2000, Mihajlović joined the Democratic Opposition of Serbia , which succeeded in overthrowing Milošević. In the following governments he was Minister of the Interior and Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia under Nebojša Čović and Zoran Đinđić (until 2004).

As Minister of the Interior, Milošević's arrest and extradition took place, as did Đinđić's assassination during Mihajlović's tenure.

Despite its conservative nature, Mihajlović had the New Democracy in Liberals of Serbia ( Serbian Либерали Србије Liberali Srbije ) renamed in 2003 to highlight the party's departure from its past in the Milošević era. In 2005 he retired from party leadership. His party has not been represented in parliament since 2007.
