Dublin Gay Theater Festival
The International Dublin Gay Theater Festival is a major international theater event that takes place annually in the first two weeks of May in Dublin ( Ireland ).
history
The festival was launched in 2004 to celebrate the 150th birthday of Oscar Wilde (born October 16, 1854 in Dublin) and to develop concepts and support for gay and lesbian theater. The official festival logo also shows an upright silhouette of Wild (green on a white background) combined with the green carnation, a gay symbol and in the large version of the logo also a black and white likeness of Wild to the left. The festival grew from year to year and is sponsored by various institutions including The Arts Council , Dublin City Council , Visit Dublin and The George public house . More than 70% of the festival content comes from outside Ireland, including productions from Poland , Germany , Zimbabwe , France , Spain , Australia , South Africa , Venezuela and Canada , but especially from the United Kingdom , the USA and Ireland . During the 2016 festival, the 3,500th performance since the festival began in 2004 was shown.
The festival is sponsored by Senator David Norris , author Emma Donoghue and playwright Terrence McNally .
According to the self-description on the official website, the International Dublin Gay Theater Festival provides “theatrical and academic forums for the presentation of new and high profile work by gay and lesbian authors, or works that have a gay character, theme, meaning or other influence by gay and lesbian artists, for visibility and to promote recognition of the contributions made by gay and lesbian people to the arts, nationally and internationally. "
Financing is provided by sponsoring and entrance fees, which are charged per performance.
Venues
The festival will be held on many inner-city, downtown stages, including The Outhouse, The Teacher's Club, The Players Theater at Trinity College, and The Pearse Center.
