The Duke of Gordon's Monument is a memorial in the small Scottish town of Elgin in the Council Area Moray . In 1981 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

With George Gordon, 5th Duke of Gordon died in 1836, the last Duke of Gordon was first awarded. This monument was erected in his memory. The Edinburgh- based Scottish architect William Burn is responsible for the design . Burn waived a fee for this work. The monument was initially executed without a statue. In his will, Alexander bequeathed Craig of Craigton an amount for the creation of a sculpture which the Morayshire Farmers Club added . The statue, designed by Alexander Handyside Ritchie , was executed by Elgin-based stonemason Thomas Goodwillie in 1855.

The Duke of Gordon's Monument occupies a prominent position on Lady Hill in the historic center of Elgin, off the A96 . It consists of a 27 meter high Tuscan column that rests on a pedestal . Above the base, the column measures a little over two meters. Inside, a spiral staircase leads to the final platform. On top of this rests a statue of the Dukes of Gordon in the robe of the Chancellor of Marischal College in Aberdeen . A cast iron fence surrounds the pedestal.
