Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica (dt .: Cathedral Basilica Holy Name of Mary ) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Hagåtña on Guam and seat of the Archbishop of Agaña . Dedicated to the Patronage of the Virgin Mary , it stands on the site where Guam's first Catholic Church was built in 1669 under the direction of Father San Vitores, and is a well-known landmark in downtown Hagåtña.

prehistory

The forerunner of today's basilica was a chapel, which was built from coarse trunks and nipa straw, which was grown in the area around the Plaza de España. The church was the center around which the administrative buildings were built. Built under the direction of Padre Diego Luís de San Vitores, with the support of the Hagåtña Chamorros , it was consecrated on February 2, 1669. The Spanish Queen Maria Anna donated 300 pesos and the chief Quipuha von Hagåtña contributed the land. In 1699 a permanent building was erected. It was built with coral stones using the technique of natural stone masonry . It was enlarged when it was elevated to a cathedral due to the creation of the Vicariate Apostolic Guam in 1911. The interior fittings such as walls, ceilings and floors were made of wood. A fresco on the back wall showed the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary . The local Chamorro repeatedly damaged the church as part of their struggle for independence against the Spaniards, natural disasters did another. This original cathedral was damaged and abandoned in the bombing during the Reconquest of Guam.

Cathedral basilica

Construction of the current cathedral began in 1955 and was completed by 1958. This modern building has a bell tower on the northwest corner and is one of the most famous structures in Guam. The basilica houses the statue of Santa Marian Kamalen , patroness of Guam, who was found swimming by a fisherman in the 16th century.

The cathedral was visited by Pope John Paul II on February 22, 1981, and on March 25, 1985, he also received the title of minor basilica .
