Dumarest

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dumarest (original title of the series: Dumarest of Terra ) is a science fiction - novel cycle by the British author EC Tubb , named after the protagonist Earl Dumarest , who experiences adventures on strange planets in search of his home Terra . The cycle was published from 1967 to 2008 in 33 volumes, of which the first 26 volumes were published in German translation.

Appear

The first volume of the series was published in 1967 under the title The Winds of Gath by DAW Books in the dos-à-dos series Ace Double . Other novels in the series followed at relatively short intervals. Tubb had originally intended to complete his hero's odyssey relatively soon, but Donald A. Wollheim , the publisher of DAW Books, persuaded him to continue with further sequels. When Wollheim retired, however, the publisher lost interest, so that after Volume 31 ( The Temple of Truth , 1985) the series initially remained a torso without a degree.

After a long break, the novel The Return , which had been announced as the final volume and was already written in 1985, was first published in 1992 in French translation before it found a small publisher in the USA in 1997. Another sequel followed in 2008 with Child of Earth .

The German translation of the novels was published by Moewig-Verlag from 1969 , initially in the booklet series Terra Nova (volumes 1 to 5) and Terra Astra (volumes 6 to 23). Volumes 1 to 15 were then re-translated as part of the EC Tubb paperback series . Volumes 1 to 4, 24 to 26 have been published by Atlantis Verlag since 2015 .

A French translation of all volumes was published under the title L'Aventurier des étoiles .

content

Dumarest travels from planet to planet in a distant future, always in search of his home planet, Earth, and at the same time on the run from a galaxy-wide organization called the Cyclan . The earth is now just a legend, and Dumarest mostly meets with disbelief and incomprehension when he mentions it. However, he gradually succeeds in obtaining more and more information, such as the sector in which the earth is located, the spectrum of the sun , the signs of the zodiac (from which he believes he can calculate the position with the help of a computer).

All inhabited planets in the future described by Tubb are evidently former colonial planets of the earth, there are practically never " extraterrestrials ". However, this future is even more gloomy, there are almost only planets with an authoritarian, feudal structure. Most of the adventures of Dumarest could almost be set in the Middle Ages as well. There are slaves and court intrigues, and in almost every novel, Dumarest has to endure at least one life-and-death duel, often as a kind of gladiator . He always fights with a simple knife. Tubb uses classic science fiction elements rather sparingly.

There is interstellar space travel, but here, too, there is a two-class society, the wealthy use a drug, Quick Time , to shorten their time , the others are put into artificial sleep with a 15 percent chance of not surviving. Dumarest holds the secret of the affinity twin , a chemical substance that allows complete control over other people, and which the Cyclan tries to steal from him.
