The Dunant primary school is a three to four-class primary school in the Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf . The school is named after Henry Dunant , founder of the International Red Cross . The school is an open all-day school at which around 450 children are taught in grades one to six. English or French can be chosen as a foreign language from the third grade onwards.

The school is housed in a listed building from 1911/12 designed by Hans Heinrich Müller and has an extension with a sports hall from 1980. The schoolyard borders the courtyard of the Copernicus School to the east. Both schools share a sports field.

School profile

Already from the school year 2007/2008, the first two classes were in the school early stages taught by year of across. This regulation only became mandatory for all primary schools in Berlin in the 2010/2011 school year. In the 2013/14 school year, Dunant Primary School returned to class-segregated teaching.

As part of the “Berlin becomes chalk-free” program, the first interactive whiteboards were installed in the Dunant primary school in the 2012/2013 school year . The aim was to replace the conventional chalkboards in all classrooms and specialist rooms within three years. The school is also a “model school for IT-based learning in the classroom” within the framework of the eEducation Masterplan Berlin.

Since 2001, Dunant Primary School has been participating in the European Comenius program to strengthen international partnerships with other schools. From 2010–12 she was in charge of the “Footsteps for Peace” project, in which schools from Poland, Spain, Greece, Italy and England participated. The project was awarded 1st place in the German eTwinning Prize in 2011 . In 2013, out of 120 submissions, it was also rated as one of the best school projects in Europe in the 2013 European eTwinning competition in the age category 4-11 years. As a follow-up project, the Dunant Primary School took part in the “Curtain Up for European Talents” project in 2012-14, together with schools from England, Italy, Spain and Poland.

The model project CeBraGeiger has been offered in cooperation with the Leo Borchard Music School Steglitz-Zehlendorf since 2009 . A string instrument can be learned as early as 1st grade. The violin , viola or cello lessons are integrated into the normal morning schedule as group lessons for 22 children, similar to a string class . The Academic Orchestra Berlin has taken on the sponsorship and regularly supports the CeBra violinists financially.

There is a cooperation for a soccer club with the neighboring soccer club SFC Stern 1900 . Other sporting and musical working groups complete the care offer and complement the after-school care.

Since 2001 there has been a school station at the school , which is looked after by two social pedagogues as a cooperation with the free youth welfare service tandem BQG . Here, fifth graders are trained as so-called "conflict guides" who mediate and mediate in disputes and conflicts between other students. The Friends' Association of Dunant Primary Schools has supported the school in its work since 1992 , financing special activities and subsidizing projects.

Since 2006 the school has been regularly attended by a former student who had to flee to Palestine from the Nazis in 1934. Ruth Lemberger (* 1923) received stumbling blocks for her parents and herself in 2015 .

Since the 2014/15 school year, the school has been a project school for the Diagonal project - connecting schools and clubs to promote hockey. The club sponsor is the Steglitzer TK.
