Dunmanway

Dunmanway ( Irish Dún Mánmhaí ) is a city in County Cork in the south-west of the Republic of Ireland .

Dunmanway is located in the southwest of County Cork, surrounded on three sides by mountains, and is the geographic center of the West Cork region .

Dunmanway is a planned 17th century town, with the two original three-legged plazas still in existence. The city center was created around two smaller tributaries of the River Bandon , which itself rises about 8 km west of the city and (flowing eastwards) passes Dunmanway on the eastern edge of the town.

In Ireland, Dunmanway is best known as the birthplace of the Protestant Republican and Gaelic football player Sam Maguire (1879-1927).

Traffic and demographics

The city is located about 55 km southwest of Cork City ; from the national road N71 at Bandon it is 27 km away. Dunmanway was connected to the railroad in Ireland between 1866 and 1961.

The population of Dunmanway was determined by the 2016 Census at 1655 people.

The Breton municipality of Quéven is twin town of Dunmanway.
