Dunsoghly Castle , Irish Caisleán Dhún Sochlaigh , is a tower house in St. Margaret’s in County Fingal, Ireland . The building is a national monument .
history
Sir Thomas Plunkett , Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas , had the castle built around 1450. Until the 1870s, the castle was continuously inhabited by members of the same family, although it was very narrow and uncomfortable by modern standards.
description
The towering, four-story tower with a rectangular floor plan has rectangular towers at each corner that protrude over the parapet. The original wooden roof, which served as a model for the restoration of Bunratty Castle and Rothe House , is supported by arches and has four oak beams ; on each support beam there is a support column that supports the ridge purlin and the associated clamps. The rafters lie flat and not on edge, as we do with modern roof trusses, and the roof truss frame is covered with split roof battens.
To the south of the tower is a small chapel with the year "1573" above the door, the instruments of Christ's Passion and the initials of Sir John Plunkett and his third wife, Janet, née. Sarsfield , are appropriate. Sir John was the builder's grandson and, like his grandfather, Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas. Sir John was Janet Sarsfield's fifth or sixth husband.
In the west and south of the castle there are remains of earthworks , defensive walls from the battles of the 1670s.
