The Translucent clams ( Phaxas pellucidus ) is a mussel from the family of Pharidae . It is also found in the North Sea and the western Baltic Sea .

features

The equally-folded, strongly constricted housings of the translucent vaginal conch are relatively small with a length of 4 cm compared to the Ensis species. They are very unequal, the very small vertebrae are about a quarter (of the total length) in front of the front end. In outline, the housings are rounded, rectangular and very elongated. The dorsal and ventral edges of the housing are by and large almost parallel. The dorsal margin is straight, the ventral margin slightly curved. The length / width ratio is about 3.5. The front end is rounded, the rear end truncated at an angle. The housings gape at both ends.

The external located ligament is a domed brown band behind the vertebrae. Two cardinal teeth protrude in the left valve. The posterior cardinal tooth is deeply split and two-pointed, the posterior part or branch of this tooth is bent backwards. There is also a single posterior lateral tooth that runs parallel to the rearward facing part of the posterior cardinal tooth. In the right valve there is a cardinal tooth and a slightly furrowed posterior lateral tooth. The mantle bay is moderately deep. There are two sphincters. The anterior sphincter is elongated and about the length of the ligament. The posterior sphincter is smaller and sits directly on the dorsal part of the mantle bay.

The shell is thin-walled and fragile. It is white to cream in color with reddish spots or rays. The surface shows very fine growth stripes parallel to the edge and, only visible under the microscope, radial stripes from the vertebra at the front end. The inner edge of the case is smooth. The yellowish green to yellowish brown periostracum has a glossy surface. The inside of the bowl is white with individual red-brown rays.

Similar species

In the pocket knife clam ( Pharus legumen ) the vertebrae are more in the middle and the front end thins out.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The translucent vaginal clam is common from Norway to West Africa and the Mediterranean . It occurs there in a water depth between 5 and 155 m on fine sandy and silty soils. It lives in tubes vertically with the front end down in the sediment.

Taxonomy

The species was first described to Thomas Pennant . It is the type species of the genus Phaxas Leach in Gray, 1852. The genus and species are generally accepted as valid taxa.
