The Dusky Sound earthquake of 2009 , which in the unpopulated area of the geographical region Fiordland on the South Island of New Zealand took place was, with a magnitude of 7.8 M W the strongest earthquake in New Zealand since 1929 Murchison Earthquake and the Hawkes-Bay- 1931 earthquake .

geography

The Dusky Sound is located on the southwestern edge of the Fiordland National Park in the region Southland , about 100 km southwest of the town of Te Anau and about 100 km northwest of Tuatapere .

The quake

On July 15, 2009 at around 9:22 pm, an earthquake starting at a depth of 30 km, which slowly released its energy upwards and released at a depth of 12 km, shook almost all of New Zealand. The vibrations were mainly felt on the South Island, but also on the west coast of the North Island up to Auckland . The quake's western radiation reached as far as Sydney in Australia . A tsunami triggered by the quake only reached the Australian coast at a low altitude. The tidal wave on the coast of the Fiordland region was about one meter. Over the following four days, 16 further aftershocks with strengths over 5 were registered, one of them with a strength of 6.1.

It is thanks to the slow-moving shock wave , in which the energy was released slowly, that no major damage was caused to buildings in the Southland region and that the number and severity of landslides were limited.

Nonetheless, on July 24, losses totaling NZ $ 2.88 million were added up, with a forecast of doubling.
