Dutzow
Dutzow is an Unincorporated community in Warren County ( Missouri , USA) on Route 94, three miles north of the city of Washington, Missouri. Dutzow is in close proximity to the Missouri River . It is the oldest German town in the US state of Missouri.
The German doctor Gottfried Duden (1785–1855), who emigrated to America in 1824 and bought a farm 60 English miles west of St. Louis near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers , founded the first German settlement in Missouri. However, it was only given the name Dutzow in 1832 from the German baron Johann Wilhelm von Bock , named after the village of the same name Dutzow (now part of Kneese ) in Mecklenburg , where Bock owned an estate.
In 1834 Friedrich Münch and Paul Follen , the founders of the Giessen Emigration Society , settled here. Friedrich Münch later moved to the nearby town of Augusta , where he founded a winery with his brother Georg.
