White cement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

White cement belongs to the group of Portland cements and is characterized by its low iron oxide content . White cement was invented by Walter Dyckerhoff and marketed for the first time in 1931 under the brand name Dyckerhoff Weiß .

Manufacture and use

The production of white cement is more complex than that of ordinary Portland cement. White cements are made from raw materials that are very low in iron (Fe 2 O 3 content <0.1%)

After firing, white cement clinker must be cooled quickly to <600 ° C in the absence of oxygen in order to remain white. That happens with water. The clinker is then broken and can then be cooled with air.

White cement is mainly used for terrazzo , exposed concrete and white plaster . It is not only suitable for light-colored preparations, but can also be more easily colored with color pigments than gray Portland cement, as the colors stand out better

Because of the water consumption, cooling raises sometimes considerable procurement problems in those countries that value white cement so much: In the Middle East and around the Mediterranean in particular , white cement is an important building material, as white reflects the sun and is highly regarded by society as a color of purity stands.

Resource-saving manufacturing processes are now also on the market that replace the water bath with a gas-cooled process in a cooling drum.
