E2 (colloquially "Eiermann table") is the name for a table that represents a classic of German functionalism and the so-called " Second Modernism ". It was designed by Adam Wieland in 1965 based on a table from 1953 by Egon Eiermann . The original design was called the Eiermann 1 table frame . The modified model has been sold under the name E2 since 2009 .

features

The table consists of a simple steel tube construction - mostly in silver or black - with the characteristic "X" shape and deposited thereon wood panel, which usually with white melamine resin coated and beech lipping is provided. The frame, which is height-adjustable with pins, is manufactured in widths of 100 and 135 cm, in basic heights of 66 and 72 cm and in depths of 60, 70 and 78 cm. The table top is available in the sizes 2.8 × 80 × 160 cm and 2.8 × 90 × 180 cm.

History of origin

In 1953 Egon Eiermann designed a metal table for work in drawing rooms and architectural offices, which was manufactured by the Max Meier company and in the metal workshop of the TH Karlsruhe . It consisted of two side parts, which were firmly welded to a rigid table frame by means of a spatially tilted cross . A simple wooden plate was placed on the frame and served as a drawing base. In 1965, when he moved to Freiburg , Klaus Brunner, an assistant to Egon Eiermann, suggested a transportable version of the table frame. Adam Wieland, head of the metal workshop at the Technical University of Karlsruhe since 1963, further developed Egon Eiermann's table frame by tilting the diagonally arranged cross braces vertically and releasably connecting them to the side panels. In the same year, production of the table frame began.

In 1984 Wieland added the E2 standing desk to the product range , in 1985 the E2 children's table and the E2 desk with offset cross braces. In 1995 a furniture dealer acquired the rights to the term "Egon Eiermann" and its products. He modified the original frame from 1953 and brought it to the market at the end of the 1990s, which can also be dismantled, with a metric tube diameter and various accessories such as height adjusters and cable ducts that had already been developed by Adam Wieland. Since Adam Wieland's collapsible table frame was an independent further development of the original, the production and distribution rights remained with Adam Wieland even after the name “Eiermann” was sold in 1995.

Most of the accessories such as cable ducts, plate amplifiers and the height adjuster with head plate have been produced since 1985. In 2009 the PC holder was completely redesigned in cooperation with product designer Kai Funke . In the same year the product name E2 was developed and registered as a trademark with the German Patent Office .
