The EASSy ( Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System ; German: East African Submarine Cable System) is a submarine cable system, which the countries of East Africa to the Internet connects . The project is seen as a milestone in the development of a stable Internet infrastructure in East Africa. It started commercial operations on July 30, 2010. Costs should to completion around million 248 dollars respectively. 92% of the shares belong to African companies, 8% to international companies.

Infrastructure

The cable connects the countries Sudan , Djibouti , Eritrea , Somalia , Kenya , Madagascar , Mozambique , Tanzania and South Africa directly with each other and with the Internet. For this purpose, EASSy was connected to the already existing submarine cables Safe , SAT-3 / WASC and SEA-ME-WE 3 . The total length is 10,500 km. With a performance of 4.72 Tb / s, EASSy is the most powerful submarine cable in East Africa.
