Classification of the EN2 in the Mozambican trunk road network

The national road EN2 ( Portuguese : Estrada Nacional Número Dois ), also called Swaziland-Maputo Highway , is a trunk road in the south of Mozambique . It runs from the Eswatin-Mozambican border to the port city of Matola and is mainly used for freight traffic to and from the Maputo agglomeration . It is part of the Goba Corridor , a traffic development zone in southern Mozambique and in the adjacent parts of Eswatini .

meaning

The EN2 is of great importance for Eswatini's import and export flow of goods, as it represents the shortest land route to an efficient and modern high-sea port for inland areas . Especially the cultivation of sugar cane and its processing plants in Eswatini benefit from this road link. A significant proportion of the freight transported here passes through the Eswatin freight center Matsapha Industrial Estate in Manzini .

The road connection is also considered important by the Mozambican government; it is maintained at regular intervals and was classified by SADC in 2012 as a “strategically important road”.

Route

The route of the EN2 begins at the border between Eswatini and Mozambique in the city of Namaacha , where it picks up or transfers traffic from the national road MR3 via the border crossing point (open 24 hours) from Lomahasha in the neighboring country. After the Mozambican border station Namaacha, the road stretches in an easterly direction and takes on a road coming from the south from the Mhlumeni / Goba border crossing and the regional road R251 coming from the north near Boane . About five kilometers further she reaches the town of Boane. Here it crosses a railway line that also comes from Eswatini and continues to Maputo. Running east from Boane, it crosses another railway line coming from the south of the city of Bela Vista . The EN2 then turns to the northeast, reaches the western foothills of Maputo Bay and shortly afterwards meets the city of Matola, where a large area of the port of Maputo is located. In Matola it reaches the national road EN4 near the Mozambican capital Maputo, which it opens up from its western outskirts to the city center. The EN1 national road branches off here not far from the Maputo port area .
