Namaacha is a small town ( vila ) in the Maputo province in southern Mozambique , near the border with Eswatini . Namaacha is an administrative post ( posto administrativo ) and the capital of the district of the same name . The place name is derived from Lomahasha , the name of a previous tribal ruler in the region.

geography

The city is located on the edge of the Lebombo Mountains , a mountain range that stretches from Mozambique to KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa . There are a good 75 kilometers between the capital Maputo and Namaacha. In the place (or in the area of the administrative post of the same name) lived on January 1, 2005 about 29,272 people. The surrounding villages of Kala-Kala, Chimachuanine, Impaputo, Mafuiane and Matsequenha are also included in Namaacha. This means that the administrative post itself is 1,372 square kilometers in size.

The EN2 road , which connects Eswatini with the urban area around Maputo, runs through the village . The place is therefore particularly important because of the border traffic to and from Eswatini , as the Namaacha / Lomahasha border post is not far.

history

Namaacha was elevated to a small town ( vila ) on April 20, 1964, while still in colonial times . In 2008 the government of Mozambique announced the establishment of ten new municipalities (roughly urban districts, Portuguese : município ), including Namaacha. The creation of a Munizip is primarily associated with the privilege of being able to choose the local government in local elections. In the local elections in 2008 and 2013 Jorge Tinga (was FRELIMO ) elected mayor.

Since 1998 Namaacha has been twinning with the Portuguese town of Santa Comba Dão .

Attractions

There is an important church in the village, it is called Igreja da Nossa Senhora de Fátima , it was consecrated in 1944. Furthermore, the waterfalls of Namaacha are known regionally.
