EU summit June 2018

On June 28 and 29, 2018, a meeting of the European Council (“ EU Summit ”) took place in Brussels .

The focus of the EU summit was on the following topics:

Agenda (June 29, 2018)

migration

The summit participants will discuss the internal and external dimensions of migration policy and talk about reforming the Common European Asylum System ( CEAS ).

Economy and finance

The summit attendees are expected

  • Adopt conclusions on various issues recently discussed in the framework of the EU leaders' agenda, such as taxation, innovation and digital.
  • Approve the country-specific recommendations in the context of the 2018 European Semester
  • advise on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF); it should also be about a schedule
  • deal with the topic of trade.

Security and defense

At the meeting

  • EU-NATO cooperation will be discussed (also with a view to the NATO summit in July 2018)
  • will provide guidelines for future work, especially as regards permanent structured cooperation ( Pesco ).
  • military mobility, are European Defense Fund , the European program for industrial development in the defense sector and the civil Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) discussed.

Brexit

The European Council ( Article 50 ) will review the status of the Brexit negotiations in the EU-27 format and adopt conclusions on the progress made.

Euro summit

The summit participants will discuss a reform of the economic and monetary union .

Others

On June 24, 2018, an informal meeting of ministers and heads of state from 16 EU countries took place in Brussels. The main topic was the refugee crisis in Europe since 2015 .

It is the first EU summit for Giuseppe Conte (Italy) and Pedro Sánchez (Spain).
