The October 2016 EU Summit took place on October 20 and 21, 2016 in Brussels , Belgium . The chair was the Polish politician Donald Tusk , President of the European Council since 2014 .

On the first day of the October meeting of the European Council , questions of migration and the international role of Russia and in particular the Russian approach in Syria were discussed . The second day focused on trade issues, in particular the planned CETA agreement with Canada .

migration

The heads of state and government discussed planned agreements with African countries of transit and origin. The African states with which the so-called migration partnerships are to be concluded are Senegal , Nigeria , Ethiopia , Mali and Niger . The aim of the agreement was to reduce migration via the " central Mediterranean route ".

Support from Greece was requested for the eastern Mediterranean route, as well as faster repatriation of refugees from the Greek islands to Turkey . The establishment of a European coast and border guard should enable the prompt reintroduction of a revised Schengen system .

Action by Russia in Syria

The European Council condemned the attacks by Russia and its allied Assad regime on civilians in Syria and called for safe passage for the people trapped in Aleppo . If the atrocities do not end, the EU will consider all options, the participants said. Theresa May gave information about Brexit during dinner and the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte reported on the Ukraine referendum in his country.

Trade issues

The planned free trade agreement with Canada CETA was rated positively by the representatives present, and open questions should be discussed as soon as possible. The European Council also called on the Commission to work on suitable agreements with Japan and the USA . To safeguard the European economic area, instruments against unfair trading practices should be modernized and revised.
