Eadmer

Eadmer , also Edmer or Ediner (* around 1060; † January 13 (?) After 1128) was an English Benedictine , theologian and chronicler in the Middle Ages.

Life

Eadmer was accepted into the Christ Church convent in Canterbury as a child and became a monk there . There he met Anselm of Canterbury when he was visiting Christ Church from his Le Bec Abbey . That relationship developed into friendship when Anselm was elected Archbishop of Canterbury . In 1120 Eadmer was appointed Archbishop of St Andrews , but was not recognized there and returned to his monastery. He is one of the first exponents of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary . His work De Excellentia Virginis Mariae is quoted in the encyclical Ad Diem Illum , dedicated to the Immaculate Conception .
