The Eagle River ( English for " Eagle -flow") is an approximately 270 km long river in southeastern Labrador Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador belonging part of the province Labrador . It is the fifth largest river in Labrador.
River course
The Eagle River rises in the Mealy Mountains , southeast of Lake Melville , at an altitude of 720 m . It initially flows 70 km in a south-south-west direction and then turns south. It flows through Lake Iatuekupau in a southerly direction. At river kilometer 135 the Nekanakau-shipu , the 22 km long outflow of Lake Nekanakau , flows into the river from the southwest. The upstream section of the Eagle River is also called Iatuekupau-shipu . The downstream section has the unofficial alternative name Nutapinuaniu-shipu . The Eagle River flows below the confluence of the Nekanakau-shipu 40 km in an east-northeast direction. At river kilometer 102, a larger nameless river flows into the Eagle River coming from the south. This flows the rest of the way to the northeast and finally flows into Sandwich Bay , a deep bay on the east coast of Labrador.
Hydrology
The Eagle River drains an area of 10,824 km². The mean discharge at the mouth is 254 m³ / s. The river carries the largest amounts of water during the snowmelt in late spring. The months with the highest discharge are May and June with an average of 788 and 762 m³ / s.
Fish fauna
The river is considered one of the most important spawning areas for Atlantic salmon in North America. A waterfall near the mouth is not a particular obstacle for migratory fish . Below the waterfall is a popular fishing spot with several camps. In addition to the Atlantic salmon, there are also anadromous and non-anadromous brook char , the sucker carp species Catostomus commersonii (white sucker) and Catostomus catostomus (longnose sucker) as well as pike . The following species are also suspected in the river: three-spined and nine-spined stickleback , American eel and arctic smelt .
