biography
Earl Averill grew up in Washington State, where he played in various semi-professional baseball leagues until 1926. That year he signed a contract in the Pacific Coast League with the San Francisco team . Because of his good performance, he was signed by the Cleveland Indians in 1929 . On April 16, 1929 Averill made his debut in the game against the Detroit Tigers , which the Indians won 5-4. In his first chance at all, Averill managed a home run ; thus he was the first player in the American League to do so. On September 17, 1930, Averill set new records for the American League with four home runs in a double header and 11 RBIs .
In his over ten years with the Cleveland Indians, Averill was appointed to the AL All-Star Team six times from 1933 to 1938 . In the categories Total Bases , RBI, Runs and Triples , he still leads the Indians' best list. Averill joined the Detroit Tigers on June 10, 1939, and ended his career with the Boston Braves in 1940.
In 1975 Earl Averill was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame . His number 3 is one of only six jersey numbers no longer awarded by the Cleveland Indians.
