Earl of Devonshire

Earl of Devonshire is a hereditary British title of nobility created twice in the Peerage of England .

Awards and other titles

The title was first created on July 21, 1603 for Charles Blount, 8th Baron Mountjoy . In 1594 he had inherited the title of Baron Mountjoy , which had been bestowed on his ancestor Walter Blount on June 20, 1465 . Both titles expired on his death on April 3, 1606.

In the second bestowal, the title was created on August 7, 1618 for William Cavendish, 1st Baron Cavendish of Hardwick . This had already been elevated to Baron Cavendish of Hardwick on May 4, 1605 . His great-grandson, the 4th Earl , was also elevated to Duke of Devonshire on May 12, 1694 . The earldom has since been a subordinate title of the respective duke.

Probable title heir ( Heir apparent ) is the eldest son of the current title holder William Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington (* 1969).
