Baron Mountjoy

Baron Mountjoy was a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded twice in the Peerage of England and the Peerage of Ireland and once in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Awards

The title was first created on June 20, 1465 in the Peerage of England by Letters patent for the Treasurer of England , Walter Blount . His great-great-great-grandson, the 8th Baron , was also elevated to Earl of Devonshire on July 21, 1603 . Since he left no legitimate children, both titles expired on his death on April 3, 1606.

His illegitimate son and heir Mountjoy Blount was raised to Baron Mountjoy , of Mountjoy Fort in the County of Tyrone , in the Peerage of Ireland on January 31, 1618 . On June 5, 1627 he was also awarded the title Baron Mountjoy , of Thurveston in the County of Derby , in the Peerage of England . On August 3, 1628, he was raised in the Peerage of England to Earl of Newport , in the Isle of Wight . The titles expired on the childless death of his youngest son, the 4th Earl, on September 25, 1679.

In the fourth bestowal on January 1, 1712 in the Peerage of Great Britain, the title Baron Mountjoy , in the Isle of Wight, was newly created for General Thomas Windsor, 1st Viscount Windsor . This was a descendant of a daughter of the 1st Baron first bestowal and had already been raised on June 19, 1699 in the Peerage of Ireland to Viscount Windsor , of Blackcastle. Both titles expired with the death of his son, the 2nd Viscount, on January 25, 1758.

The title was last created on September 19, 1789 in the Peerage of Ireland for Luke Gardiner . This was also raised to Viscount Mountjoy in the Peerage of Ireland on September 30, 1795 . His son, the 2nd Viscount, was also raised to Earl of Blessington in the Peerage of Ireland on January 22, 1816 , but left no sons, so that the title expired on his death on May 25, 1829.
