Thomas Windsor, 1st Viscount Windsor ( 1669 - June 8, 1738 ) was a British nobleman , politician and general.

Life

He was a younger son of Thomas Windsor, 1st Earl of Plymouth from his second marriage to Ursula Widdrington.

From 1685 to 1687 he was an MP for Droitwich in the English House of Commons . In 1695 he ran unsuccessfully as a member of Parliament for Reigate , in 1698 for Evesham . On August 28, 1703 he married Lady Charlotte Herbert (around 1676-1733), widow of John Jeffreys, 2nd Baron Jeffreys (1673-1702), daughter of Philip Herbert, 7th Earl of Pembroke . His wife brought extensive land holdings in Monmouthshire , Glamorganshire and Sussex with in the marriage, which were associated with corresponding voting rights in the general election and enabled him in the British House of Commons 1705 to 1708 a seat of MP for Bramber and 1708 to 1711 for Monmouth .

Parallel to his political career, he embarked on a military career. He joined a cavalry regiment in 1685 as Cornet , was promoted to captain in 1687 , lieutenant-colonel in 1690 and colonel in 1694 . From 1689 he fought in the Palatinate War of Succession in Flanders on the side of King Wilhelm III. , under which he also held the court office of Groom of the Bedchamber for King Wilhelm III from 1692 to 1702 . held. In August 1695 he was badly wounded in the head during a battle in Flanders. After his regiment was dissolved in 1797 after the Peace of Rijswijk and he was placed on half pay, he was raised on June 19, 1699 to the hereditary Viscount Windsor , of Blackcastle. The award took place in the Peerage of Ireland so that he could continue to run for the English House of Commons. After the outbreak of the War of the Spanish Succession , he was promoted to Brigadier General in 1702 and was given command of a Dragoons regiment in Ireland. In 1704 he became major-general and in 1707 lieutenant-general .

On December 31, 1711, he was in the Peerage of Great Britain the title of Baron Mountjoy , in the Isle of Wight , bestowed upon him, which he resigned from the House of Commons and received a seat in the British House of Lords .

From his marriage to Lady Charlotte Herbert he had a son and four daughters:

  • another daughter († young).
