William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire (born September 26, 1698 - December 5, 1755 ) was a British nobleman and politician from the Cavendish family .

Life

William Cavendish was the eldest son of the 2nd Duke of Devonshire of the same name and Rachel Russell. He had two sisters and two brothers and an illegitimate older half-sister.

He was at New College of Oxford University trained. In 1721 he was first elected to the British House of Commons . There he was Burgess for Lostwithiel in Cornwall from 1721 to 1724 , Burgess for Grampound in Cornwall from 1724 to 1727 and Knight of the Shire for Huntingdonshire from 1727 to 1729 . In Parliament he belonged to the Whigs' party . When his father died on June 4, 1729, he inherited his title of nobility as 3rd Duke of Devonshire , 3rd Marquess of Hartington , 6th Earl of Devonshire and 6th Baron Cavendish of Hardwick , thereby becoming a member of the House of Lords and leaving House of Commons.

From 1726 to 1731 he was Captain of the Gentlemen Pensioners and from 1729 until his death Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire . In 1731 he became Privy Counselor and at the same time Lord Seal Keeper for two years . He was Lord Steward of the Household twice, from 1733 to 1737 and again from 1744 to 1749. In between he held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1737 to 1744 .

Marriage and offspring

On March 27, 1718 he married Catherine Hoskins (or Hoskyn; * around 1700; † 1777), the daughter of John Hoskins, steward of the Duke of Bedford . With her he had seven children:

William Cavendish is the last common ancestor of Prince Charles and Diana , descended from his children William and Elizabeth.
