Earl of Egmont
Earl of Egmont was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .
The name of the earl title refers to a field name near Churchtown in County Cork , where the earls owned an estate. At the same time, the Earl's family also claimed to be descended from the Dutch noble Egmond family .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on November 6, 1733 for the House of Commons John Perceval, 1st Viscount Perceval . Already on April 21, 1715 he had been raised to Baron Perceval , of Burton in the County of Cork , and February 25, 1723 to Viscount Perceval , of Kanturk in the County of Cork. In addition, in 1691 he had inherited the title of 5th Baronet , of Kanturk in the County of Cork, which had been created on September 9, 1661 in the Baronetage of Ireland for his grandfather John Perceval (1629-1665).
His son, who later became 2nd Earl, was First Lord of the Admiralty and became Baron Lovel and Holland , of Enmore in the County of Somerset on May 7, 1762 . This title belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain and, in contrast to the Irish titles, was associated with a hereditary seat in the British House of Lords . His seventh son was the British Prime Minister Spencer Perceval .
The 6th Earl also inherited the title Baron Arden , of Lohort Castle in 1840, created on May 23, 1770 in the Peerage of Ireland for his aunt, Catherine Perceval, Countess of Egmont († 1784), the second wife of the 2nd Earl the County of Cork, as well as the title Baron Arden , of Arden in the County of Warwick created on July 28, 1802 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for their son, Charles Perceval, 2nd Baron Arden (1756-1840) .
After the 9th Earl died on January 10, 1929 without heirs, the title was suspended because it was unclear who was the next entitled heir. The title was claimed by his third cousin, Frederick Perceval, who lived in Canada . He died in 1932 before the Committee for Privileges and Conduct of the House of Lords also formally awarded him the title in 1939, which his son now received as the 11th Earl.
With the death of his son, the 12th Earl, on November 6, 2011, the Earldom Egmont and all subordinate titles expired.
