Earl of Malmesbury
Earl of Malmesbury is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain , named after the town of Malmesbury in Wiltshire .
The Earls' family home is Greywell Hill House , near Basingstoke in Hampshire .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was bestowed on December 29, 1800 to the British diplomat James Harris, 1st Baron Malmesbury , along with the subordinate title Viscount FitzHarris , of Hurn Court in the County of Southampton . He had been ambassador in various European countries and a member of the House of Commons and was raised on September 19, 1788 as Baron Malmesbury , of Malmesbury in the County of Wilts .
The eldest son of the respective earl carries the courtesy title Viscount FitzHarris as title heir .
