East Side Park

The East Side Park is located on Mühlenstrasse in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain . It is part of the Mediaspree investor project and named after the adjacent East Side Gallery , a painted section of the Berlin Wall .

History of origin

The park is around 1.6  hectares and is located on the former border strip near the Oberbaum Bridge . The design comes from the landscape architects Häfner / Jimenez and won first prize in a design competition in 2003. an architecture competition.

The area was designed from October 2006 to spring 2009, with trees being felled and contaminated soil being disposed of. The construction costs amounted to 1.4 million euros, which were borne by the district, the Senate Department for Urban Development, the Anschutz Entertainment Group and the Berlin city cleaning companies .

Construction of the park

The park includes a promenade overlooking the Spree and in the midst of the pier "Boat Landing Plaza" for the multifunctional event hall Mercedes-Benz Arena (formerly O 2 World). There is also a sand playing field and seating. The creation of a grassland area is intended to remind people that the former “ death strip ” of the Berlin Wall was located at this point .

The part of the park to the west of the former Brommy Bridge was also designed by the Häfner / Jimenez office under the title “Park on the Spree” and is formally linked to the design language of the East Side Park.

criticism

To create a connection from the banks of the Spree to O 2 World, a 45-meter-long section of the wall was removed.
