The East Cape ( English for Eastern Cape ) is the easternmost cape on the north coast of Coronation Island in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It is located around 2.3 km southeast of Cape Bennett and marks the northeast boundary of the entrance from Lewthwaite Strait into Spence Harbor .
The British whaling captain George Powell (1794-1824) and his American counterpart Nathaniel Palmer discovered and roughly mapped it together in December 1821. It was not named until 1933 when it was mapped by scientists from the British Discovery Investigations .
