East Finchley Cemetery
East Finchley Cemetery is a cemetery and crematorium in East Finchley ( Borough of Barnet ) in London . The City of Westminster is the owner and operator of the facilities .
History & use
The St. Marylebone Burial Board bought about 0.2 km² of arable land in 1854 and let the architecture firm Barnet & Brick Ltd. create the cemetery. The facility was opened in 1855 under the name St Marylebone Cemetery .
In the cemetery there is a burial chapel of the Anglican Church, the interior of which is in the neo-Gothic style. A special feature of the complex are two Lebanon cedars planted in 1856 on the green in front of the chapel.
In 1937 a crematorium was added to the cemetery.
Due to various reorganizations in local government, the cemetery was administered by the Metropolitan Borough of St Marylebone from 1900 .
Two war cemeteries were built on the site . Of these, 75 graves date from the First World War . 79 graves were laid out during the Second World War . Furthermore, a memorial wall for war dead who were cremated here during the Second World War was erected.
In 1965 the cemetery was assigned to the City of Westminster . It was at this point that the facility was given its current name.
The cemetery complex was awarded the British Green Flag Award in 2007, 2008 and 2009 - an award given to gardens that are demanding in terms of horticulture and are visitor-friendly.
The complex currently comprises a total of around 22,000 graves and is still used for burials.
