The Eastern Mennonite University (short: EMU ) is a Mennonite university in the USA . The sponsor of this private Liberal Arts University is the Mennonite Church USA , one of the historic peace churches . EMU is based in Harrisonburg , Virginia , with a branch in Lancaster, Pennsylvania .
The EMU is best known worldwide for its Center for Justice and Peacebuilding (CJP) , especially with the Graduate Program Conflict Transformation . The CJP already has over 3,000 graduates from 119 countries. The founders John Paul Lederach and Howard Zehr are internationally known experts in the field of conflict resolution and justice. In October 2011, CJP graduate Leymah Gbowee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Every second student at Easter Mennonite University has no Mennonite background, while the majority of students profess the Christian faith. In addition to the EMU, there are a number of other Mennonite universities and colleges in North America.
