John Paul Lederach

John Paul Lederach (born April 17, 1955 ) is an American Mennonite sociologist, peace researcher and professor of international peacebuilding at the Catholic University of Notre Dame in South Bend , Indiana . He is the director of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peacestudies . He is a co-founder of Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg , Virginia , where he built the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding .

Live and act

Lederach was born in Indiana and grew up as the son of a Mennonite pastor in Oregon and Kansas. He studied history and peace studies at Bethel College , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1980. In 1988 he received his doctorate in sociology from the University of Colorado with a thesis on social conflict management (English: Social Conflict Program ). From 1975 to 1996 he held various positions on the Mennonite Central Committee , including director of the Mennonite Conciliation Service (US) and the International Conciliation Service .

From 1990 to 2001 he was Professor of Conflict Research and Sociology at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he founded the Conflict Transformation Program and the Institute for Peace Education. Since 2001 Lederach has been Professor of International Peacebuilding at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at Notre Dame Catholic University in South Bend, Indiana. He is also a part-time professor for the conflict transformation program at Eastern Mennonite University.

Lederach developed a training program for conflict transformation. He offers mediation all over the world. He has worked as an advisor to government officials and opposition groups in various countries, such as Colombia , Nepal , Nicaragua , Northern Ireland , the Philippines and Somalia . He works internationally as a speaker at universities and as a mediation trainer.

Honors

Lederach has received two honorary doctorates.

Private

Lederach is married to Wendy S. Liechty and they have two children. They live in Indiana and Colorado .

Publications

Lederach has written or edited over 20 books that have been translated into several languages. He has also written numerous articles, monographs and scientific papers. Much of his writing relates to his experiences as a peacemaker and mediation trainer around the world.
