The Ebberg is an elevation in the Ardey Mountains between Schwerte - Westhofen in the south and Dortmund- Buchholz in the north. There has been a Friends of Nature House on the Ebberg since 1928.

Mining on the Ebberg has been guaranteed since 1778. At that time, an old tunnel was reactivated by the Louisenglück union. In 1783 the mining company union Glücksfortgang opened up the Sengsbank seam. The degradation of this seam was carried out east toward Kückshausen. There were disputes over the mining rights between the two companies. The Louisenglück colliery stopped mining in 1807.

1820 began mining happiness progress with coal mining . The coal mined was brought to the Ruhr on a stone coal route that still exists today. The colliery was closed in 1823 due to its impossibility to build .

The Friends of Nature House

In 1928 the tourist association Die Naturfreunde built a nature friend house on the Ebberg. A meadow was created around the house where visitors could camp. After the fee for camping, this meadow is still known today as the fifty pfennig meadow.

Today the all-year-round managed Naturfreundehaus is a conference center and eco station. But even single travelers can stay overnight in the house located directly on the Westfalenwanderweg and Ruhrtalradweg .

Ebberg nature reserve

There has been a nature reserve on Ebberg since 1979. This protected area was set up as an amphibian biotope around a former quarry where Ruhr sandstone was mined for railway construction. In 1998 the area was expanded to include an oak-hornbeam forest and a mixed forest area.

Today the nature reserve has a size of 18.6 hectares.
