Eberhard Bonitz

Eberhard Bonitz (born January 19, 1921 in Dresden ; † September 16, 1980 in Lingen (Ems) ) was a German church musician , organ expert and composer .

Life

Eberhard Bonitz studied from 1939 to 1941 at the Church Music Institute of the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church in Leipzig, among others with Johann Nepomuk David and Kurt Thomas. During his first year of study he was appointed Günther Ramin's representative on the organ of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, where he accompanied the St. Thomas Choir during performances. In 1941 he became city cantor in Naila / Upper Franconia. From 1943 until the bombing of Dresden in 1945, he taught music at the Annenschule in Dresden. In the same year he converted to the Catholic faith in Bamberg. As an organ expert, he was responsible for, among other things, the repair of the large organ of the Benedictine abbey of Münsterschwarzach near Würzburg.

From 1948 to 1954 he was church music director, organist and choir director at the collegiate church in Ellwangen / Jagst and then diocesan music director, organist and choirmaster at St. Bonifatius Church in Lingen / Ems. In the Diocese of Osnabrück he was the leading organ expert for all organ renovations. He devoted himself to these tasks until his death after a serious illness.

Eberhard Bonitz has performed several large choir and orchestral concerts in Erlangen. In addition to his extensive concert activities as an organist, Eberhard Bonitz also made a name for himself as a composer. His oeuvre includes organ and chamber music as well as sacred choral works. He was particularly committed to the revision of the hymn and the chorale movements. He is the author of numerous scientific papers on organ building and on various organs, which he was involved in restoring after the Second World War.
