Eberhard Grames (* 1953 in Essen ) is a German photographer .

life and work

From 1972 to 1976 he studied ethnology and art history in Cologne. His preferred field was initially color landscape photography, which is why he traveled extensively in the 70s and 80s and the like. a. to Iceland, the USA and Japan. On later trips, which also took him to China, Russia and Australia, he also devoted himself to still life as a means of reporting and portraits. The ethnographic aspect is always important to him, reports about dying or changing cultures are an essential part of his subject. Grames is strongly influenced by Japanese aesthetics. Object representations in the woodcuts by Hokusai and Hiroshige inspired him to photograph objects with their own and almost mystical character. He uses a variety of found objects for his still lifes, which have been created since 1986. These images are dominated by Japanese and Indian influences. The tool of the trade for these recordings is an 8x10 inch walking floor camera, which results in strict reflection on the design of the motif, apart from all the technical possibilities of today's modern recording technology.

Two volumes with black-and-white still lifes testify to the meticulousness that he shows in his filigree still lifes, which are often composed of exotic little things.

Strict composition and strong reduction of colors characterize his style, which he also maintains with large format or digital processing.

His work on people and ruins in Eastern Europe (exhibition 1991 at MoMA , New York ) received international attention for the first time .

Particularly noteworthy is his "Ballad by Rita Tushingham" from 1987-1993. With this book he created a work that is unique in photographic literature, which in a bibliophilically designed volume in a cross-section of his creative abilities ingeniously combines the topics of fairy tale essay, poetry, album, portrait, landscape photography and still life.

In 1982 Eberhard Grames was one of the founding members of the Bilderberg photography agency.
