Eberhard Hilscher (born April 28, 1927 in Schwiebus ; † December 7, 2005 in Berlin ) was a German writer and literary scholar .

Life

Eberhard Hilscher was born in 1927 in Schwiebus in the Mark Brandenburg, today's Polish Świebodzin. Hilscher studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin . Since the beginning of the 1950s he worked as a freelance author and writer.

Hilscher initially published on Gerhart Hauptmann , Arnold Zweig and Thomas Mann . In 1961 he became famous with his first novella, the historical story Tierra del Fuego ahoy! via Charles Darwin . In 1962 his short stories The Discovery of Love appeared on Socrates , Michelangelo , Immanuel Kant and Chopin, among others . His best-known work, Die Weltzeituhr , the "novel of an era" appeared in 1983, followed in 1992 by the novel Venus conquers the volcano as well as poetry and thoughts. 30 essays from Goethe to Einstein (2000). In the last years of his life, Hilscher worked on the sequel to the novel Die Weltzeituhr , which was published posthumously in 2008 under the title Gambler and Spoiler . Both books, with their unusual form, reflect contemporary German history from 1927 to the mid-1990s. Since Die Weltzeituhr could originally only appear censored, the "Last Hand Edition" followed in 2017 by Mitteldeutscher Verlag (Halle) on the basis of corrected copies by the author and the original manuscript from the manuscript department of the Berlin State Library.

Quotes
