Eberhardt Purrucker

Eberhardt Purrucker (born May 29, 1927 in Polenz ; † December 17, 2019 in Berlin ) was a German painter, graphic artist, photographer and art educator.

Life

Eberhardt Purrucker was born in Polenz, Saxony. Among other things, he attended the commercial school in Grimma before he was drafted and wounded in the last days of the war in 1945.

In 1948 he began to study art at the Academy of Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig , which he broke off in 1950 because of criticism of his work. Since there was no prospect of being promoted as an artist or being accepted into the artists' association, Purrucker worked temporarily as a freelancer and to earn a living. Because of this situation he left the GDR and moved to West Berlin in 1952 . There he began to study art and art education at the College of Fine Arts (1952–1957).

In addition to his teaching activities as an art educator (Menzel Oberschule, Berlin-Tiergarten), he was the head of art education for the Tiergarten district. From 1961 to 1976 he held a teaching position at the University of Education in Berlin. From 1983 he devoted himself exclusively to his artistic work as a painter, graphic artist and photographer.

After completing his studies, he continued to create abstract works well into the 1960s, also in large formats, based on gestural painting. The color black dominated oil painting and ink drawing. On numerous trips in Europe since the 1950s, mainly to Italy , but also to France , Spain , Ireland , Iceland , Norway and Sweden , photographs were taken, some of which were used as templates. Doors and gates of old houses in southern Europe became one of his main themes.

On a trip to the Languedoc in southern France in 1985, Purrucker again approached the landscape with watercolors, drawings and etchings. From the first drawings he turned to watercolor and a new color scheme. Over the next two decades, he mainly created landscapes (from 1989 also in Brandenburg) and still lifes with flowers. From 2003 Purrucker was mainly concerned with observing reflections in water. In his photographs, known as “mirror images”, the abstract structures of the mirrored environment created on the moving surface of the water are recorded.
