Entrance to the Eberstadt cemetery

The Eberstädter Friedhof is a cemetery in Darmstadt-Eberstadt .

History and description

Around 1835, the Eberstadt cemetery was laid out in the south of Eberstadt . The oldest part of the cemetery was laid out as a rectangle. A building with an archway was built on the northwest corner in the 19th century . At that time this building served as a morgue and overseer's house. The archway forms the old main entrance.

In 1982 a new mourning hall in the modern style was completed at the northeast corner . This is noticeable through its far-drawn tin roof. Following the new mourning hall, a new second main entrance was built, which also serves as a forecourt to the mourning hall. The forecourt is limited to the east by a new urn niche wall.

The Eberstadt cemetery has been expanded several times. The rectangular shape of the cemetery was initially retained. Some trails were lime trees as avenues running. The rectangular shape was later abandoned. The latest extensions were given a curved route; the terrain rising towards the Frankenstein made it necessary. Today the Eberstädter Friedhof presents itself as a park-like area in the midst of dense buildings.
