Hook.f.

The genus Echidnopsis belongs to the subfamily of the silk plants (Asclepiadoideae) within the family of the dog poison plants (Apocynaceae). It was set up by Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1871. It includes succulent plants from West Asia to South Africa.

description

They are succulent plants. The trunks grow sparsely branched, with continued tip growth: they are six to ten-edged, ribs broken down into elongated hexagonal cusps, which carry tiny leaflets, finely papilous, warty, dull or cloudy green, often reddened.

From small fields between the humps towards the tip of the stems, two to four short-stalked flowers are grouped together. The flowers, which are relatively small to close relatives, are five-fold. Calyx five-spatula; Tips triangular, ovate, bell-shaped, upright or wheel-shaped. Corolla yellow, brown or red, inside fine papillae. Corona single or double, differently designed. The pollinia are small and semicircular.

Occurrence

According to R. Govaerts, the 36 species occur in northeastern and eastern tropical Africa and on the Arabian Peninsula.

Systematics

The systematic scope of the genus is still completely uncertain. There are two quite different versions of the genus, one with many species (“splitting”) and one with a few species (“lumping”). The species list given by B. Müller and F. Albers (in F. Albers and U. Meve) represents a compromise between the two extremes.
