Echinenone is a ketocarotenoid, so it belongs to the class of carotenoids or xanthophylls . The name is derived from the Latin name of the sea urchin ( Echinoidea ). Echinenon is the main carotenoid in the gonads of the sea urchins, which gives them their typical color.
Echinenone is often used as an internal standard in carotenoid analysis.
