Echinocactus horizonthalonius is a species of plant in the genus Echinocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet horizonthalonius means '(Greek halos) shield edge, horizontal shield edge'. Foreign language trivial names are "Blue Barrel Cactus", "Devil's Head Cactus", "Eagle-Claw Cactus", "Mancacaballo", "Mancamula", "Melon Cactus", "Turk's Cap Cactus", "Turk's Head Cactus" and "Viznaga Meloncillo" ".

Echinocactus horizonthalonius grows individually or sometimes forms small groups. The depressed spherical to short cylindrical shoots are blue-green and reach heights of 10 to 50 centimeters with a diameter of 10 to 15 centimeters. There are usually 8 ribs , which are somewhat divided into cusps . The 3 to 5 stiff, somewhat flattened central spines are gray to blackish and 2.5 to 3 centimeters long. One of them is usually bent downwards. The 5 to 7 gray radial spines are 2 to 2.5 inches long and slightly curved outwards or straight.

The pink flowers are 5 to 6.2 centimeters long and 5 to 6.5 centimeters in diameter. The initially juicy, later withering fruits are covered with soft, white wool and are 2.5 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocactus horizonthalonius is common in the southern United States in the states of Arizona , New Mexico, and Texas . In Mexico, the distribution area extends in the south to San Luis Potosí . The first description was published in 1839 by Charles Lemaire . A distinction is made between the following two varieties:

  • Echinocactus horizonthalonius var. Horizonthalonius
  • Echinocactus horizonthalonius var. Nicholii

Echinocactus horizonthalonius var. Nicholii is protected in the United States by the US Endangered Species Act .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
