Echinocereus barthelowanus is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet barthelowanus honors captain Benjamin Barthelow, in whose company Joseph Nelson Rose exploredthe coast of Baja California on the US steamship Albatross .

Echinocereus barthelowanus has many shoots and often forms groups of up to 80 centimeters in diameter. The cylindrical, upright shoots are up to 30 centimeters long and 3.5 to 5 centimeters in diameter. Most of them are covered by the dense thorns. There are eight to ten ribs that are somewhat humped and on which there are large areoles . The thorns, which are initially pink to red in the youth stage , later become darker and are often black in old age. The five to nine strong, straight central spines have a length of up to 7 centimeters. The up to 18 radial spines are 1 to 2 centimeters long.

The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are lavender in color. They appear from near the shoot tips to the base of the shoots. The flowers are up to 5 centimeters long and 4 to 6 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus barthelowanus is distributed in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur in the area of Isla Magdalena and neighboring islands.

The first description by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1922 in the third volume of their work The Cactaceae .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
