Echinocereus freudenbergeri is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet freudenbergeri honors the German cactus collector Gerhard Freudenberger.
description
Echinocereus freudenbergeri grows individually or forms groups. The green, cylindrical shoots are up to 15 centimeters long and 4 to 6 centimeters in diameter. There are 14 to 18 ribs . The 20 to 25 whitish to gray-brown to gray thorns are up to 2.5 centimeters long. It is difficult to distinguish between central and radial spines.
The slightly purple-pink to magenta-colored flowers reach a diameter of 6 to 12 centimeters. The egg-shaped fruits are carmine red. They have a length of 2 to 2.5 centimeters and a diameter of 5 to 8 centimeters.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Echinocereus freudenbergeri is distributed in the Mexican state of Coahuila between Cuatro Ciénegas and Torreón .
The first description by Gerhard RW Frank was published in 1981. Nomenclatory synonyms are Echinocereus delaetii var. Freudenbergeri (G. Frank) NPTaylor (1985) and Echinocereus longisetus subsp. freudenbergeri (G. Frank) W.Blum (1998).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
